Bone Broth: How to make it taste great!

Bone broth has been around for hundreds of years and the benefits were well known to our ancestors. The savoury drink, filling mugs around the country is not so much of a fad as it is a lifestyle choice. There are many known benefits of the beverage to your gut health but the real question is how can we make it taste good too?

Making Bone Broth

Once you have bones and your very own bone broth recipe, making your own brew is as easy as pie! Your local butcher will undoubtedly be able to supply you with the perfect product for your homemade bone broth. The best options are chicken necks and frames, oxtails, beef knuckles and soup bones. If you have cooked any dishes lately, bones from your Sunday night roast chicken or turkey will do the trick. Add them to a pot with a splash of cider vinegar, chopped carrot, two stalks of celery and some aromatic herbs such as rosemary, oregano or parsley. Pour in water until it covers all of your ingredients and bring to a gentle boil. Skim off the top layer of greyish scum, which is simply denatured protein, and then reduce the heat until it bubbles very slowly and gently. It will take approx. 20 to 24 hrs to extract the Collagen, vitamins and minerals from the marrow and bones. This will leave you with the delectable concoction that will act as your very own gut boosting beverage for any occasion.

Alternatively, some health food stores also sell bone broth if you would prefer to purchase a pre-made alternative. Powdered Bone Broths offer a great option as they will last for many months once opened and can be easily taken with you to work for a healthy alternative to your mid-morning coffee.

Health Benefits

The known benefits of bone broth include the prevention and treatment for leaky guts. It heals and seals your gut, easing conditions such as chronic diarrhoea, constipation and various food intolerances. Other effects include protection for your joints, boosting collagen, better sleep and bone strength and improved skin hydration.

Using Bone Broth

There are many ways in which people ingest the broth and it strays from the straightforward drink in a cup. Some find the savoury taste a little unnerving which is why it does not hurt to be a little creative in the way you drink it.  An easy way to incorporate bone broth into your favourite recipes is by using it to make your grains. In place of water, you can boil your rice, quinoa or couscous in bone broth to feel the added health benefits. It also increases the flavour of your dishes tenfold. One of the most popular methods is to use it as the base for any soup. This is a more traditional take on the use of bone broth and elevates any soup recipe.

Whether it is beef bone broth, store-bought or your unique recipe, bone broth can help to sustain a healthy digestive system and leave you feeling refreshed and energised. Using it in your everyday diet can have a massive effect on your life and how you feel both inside and out.
