What is collagen?

Collagen is a type of protein which is a major component of connective tissues. Humans and animals create their own collagen naturally, and it is found in our skin, bones, gut lining, joints, nails, and hair. It brings many benefits to the body, including improving the health of our skin, bone and joints, but with age our body’s ability to produce collagen declines.

There are over 20 types of collagen found in the human body alone. They vary slightly in their structure with the most common forms sold being type I, II and III. Type I and III are predominantly found in the dermal layer of the skin, bone, tendon, muscle and connective tissue. Type II collagen comes from cartilage.

When collagen is extracted from an animal, the source material is heated and undergoes processing that begins to unravel the triple helix molecules. Collagen hydrolysate undergoes an additional process in manufacturing whereby specific enzymes are added to breakdown the protein chains into small collagen peptides. These peptides make collagen more bioavailable in comparison to gelatine as it can be absorbed into the bloodstream very rapidly.

Hydrolysed collagen contains a unique profile of amino acids, including eight of the nine essential amino acids. The glycine, hydroxyproline, proline and arginine in collagen accounts for over half of these amino acids and is the reason why this form of supplement can trigger collagen production within the body. Nutraviva Vegan Collagen Alternative provides not only a near identical amino acid profile, it also includes essential nutrients required to stimulate the production of collagen including vitamin C, zinc, copper and anthocyanins.

Why look for a vegan collagen alternative?

There are several reasons that people may choose a plant-based vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. This includes for ethical reasons, to reduce their impact on the environment and the greater availability, cost effectiveness and increased profile of vegan alternative products on the market today. Advocates of vegan and vegetarian eating suggest that by increasing plant-based products into a healthy diet this may result in a reduced level of cholesterol & blood pressure, lower body mass index and reduce risk of disease.

Following years of thorough research and product testing, Nutraviva have developed a true vegan collagen alternative to cater for the health needs and dietary requirements of our valued customers. Nutraviva Vegan Collagen Alternative not only has a comparable amino acid profile per serve to that of our premium bovine and marine collagen powders.
